Making Mathematics with Needlework

Making Mathematics with Needlework, edited by Sarah-Marie Belcastro and Carolyn Yackel, is a crazy-quilt of connections. The math is somewhat of a scrap-bag – inspirational suggestions, questions for student-teacher discussion, glimpses of deep theorems. From a fiber arts perspective, there's not a lot that's non-obvious yet relevant to practical crocheters, knitters, et al. Occasionally there's excessive jargon and irrelevant digressions. That's OK!

The main themes touched upon in this mathematical buffet are:

  • topology — surfaces and shapes such as Möbius strips, Klein bottles, tori, knots, braids, ...
  • number theory – integer ratios, fractional approximations, prime factors, ...
  • geometric patterns – symmetries, scalings, fractal self-similar designs, ...

And at a deeper level, this 2008 book offers hints on how to "pop up a level" and think meta about a craft!
